It's time to share one of my many odd obsessive habits...I count women. I counted them in English and calculus classes. I counted them at New York Venture Capital Association gatherings. I counted them in business school. Comdex. Networld. Microsoft Web Tech Ed. Interop. DEMO. CEO symposia. Why? I like to order what I see. These numbers mean something to me. I like knowing what the numbers actually are. And besides, why not add things up?
At any rate, here's the first set of numbers that I have to share. I'm going to post these for a while to see if anything interesting comes of it.
Environment: DEMOfall 2005 (my favorite product launch conference, because Chris Shipley does an amazing job of selection, and because who doesn't like Mike Sigal?)
Caveats: I didn't count anyone from the attendee list that was from a PR firm. Whether they were male OR female. (Let's be honest, it skews the results.) 35 PR names total culled from the count. And I had to make best guess on half a dozen rather complicated first names.
Count:
Men: 436
Women: 75
XX Footprint: 14.67%
This is actually higher than in many tech environments. Nice going, Chris!
