Environment: The MuniWireless 2005 conference sponsored by MuniWireless and the marvelous Esme Vos.
Caveats: Since this is Esme's first muni wireless conference, I'm not sure what the room demographics are. Probably a mix of vendors, municipal representative, press, and a few money folks. I also didn't check to see who was in the bathroom. I just count 'em as I see 'em.
Keynote Count:
Men: 147
Women: 27
Keynote XX Footprint: 16.46%
Education Count:
Men: 56
Women: 11
Education XX Footprint: 16.34%
There's probably something interesting about the consistent ratios for the main keynote and the pre-conference educational session on how to build successful municipal wireless deployments. But without knowing the demographics in each room, it's tough to guess. Hopefully, this means that the women in the room are equally active participants in creating muni wireless, as versus showing up in supporting roles.
But then there's the other question, why are there more women at a muni wireless conference than at a technology launch conference? A 14 percent increase would be considered significant by pollsters and consumer marketers, so maybe it's worth considering.
